Renewing our "Hearts"
in Christ Jesus!
We all know that we are to renew
our minds in Christ Jesus. Does this process
of transformation only come by focusing on the renewal
of our minds? The Bible also tells us that the Lord made our
hearts both physically and spiritually to be the center for renewal.
First, transformation happens in the "brain of the heart" and
then our mind is truly captivated. Bill Gothard says it this way, "Medical
science has now confirmed what God has stated in Scripture. We think with
our hearts as well as with our brains, and it is the thinking of our
hearts that determines who we are and what we say and what we do."
"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7a).
"Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might
not sin against Thee" (Psalm 119:11). David writes this powerful
truth concerning the heart (not mind). Understanding how God
created our hearts and properly interpreting how Scripture refers to our hearts
will bring us life-giving truth that, when applied, will bring us to a
new level of how to renew our minds in Christ Jesus. It is a foundational
truth that is a catalyst affecting our whole man. We must continually
embrace this life-long principle in God's Word throughout our Christian
walk in order to live an overcoming life in Him.
Recent discoveries have revealed that the heart contains
cells that make and release a large number of neurotransmitters, which
were previously thought to be produced only in the brain. The discovery
further affirms that the heart has its own "brain," which
communicates with the brain in the head through the nervous system,
hormonal system, and other pathways (Gershon, Michael D., M.D., The
second brain: HarperCollins, 2000).
In his book, Everyday Miracles by God's Design, Dr.
David Jernigan writes: "Within the context of the heart is
considered a single entity. The 'brain in the heart' is a network of
neurons, neurotransmitters, and proteins that send messages between
neurons." Like the brain, the heart has support cells and a complex
circuitry that enables it to act independently, learn, remember, and
produce the "feeling of the heart." The type of information
sent from the heart to the brain has a profound effect on higher
functions, influencing perceptions, emotions and thought processes.
"The heart in Scripture is variously used, sometimes
for the mind and understanding, sometimes for the will, sometimes for the
affections, sometimes for the conscience, sometimes for the whole soul.
Generally, it denotes the whole soul of man and all the faculties of it,
not absolutely, but as they are all one principle of moral operations, as
they all concur in our doing of good and evil" (The International
Standard Bible Encyclopedia).
"In essence, the heart is the "filter" by
which life enters and exits our person. The soul is an integral part of
the heart. Additionally, the heart connects the three aspects of our
being in body, soul and spirit" (Pastor Dan Gardner).
In order to guard our hearts, we have to guard what we
choose to believe or our "belief system", because what we
believe will affect our whole man - body, soul and spirit. This
means what we believe will affect our physical well-being, our mind, will
and emotions as well as the flow of the nature of God in/through our spirit
man that ultimately will bring our natural man under its rulership as we
walk in obedience to the Holy Spirit.
Learning to hide the power of God's Holy Word in our hearts
will transform our hearts and minds! As He illuminates His Word in us, it
becomes rhema and gives us life that quickens our hearts so we can live a
life pleasing to Him. But, it is a process of seeking Him, hearing Him,
applying His Word in faith and then holding on to what He said in our
hearts. As our hearts become intertwined with His heart, we will have
renewed hearts and minds in Christ Jesus our Lord. We will become
His reflection in the earth as we are changed from glory to glory into
"Guard our hearts with all
diligence for from it flows the issues of life."
"See then that you walk
circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because
the days are evil."
